Global Ocean Challenge 20th September 2010

This inaugural race, organised by legendary sailors Josh Hall and Brian Hancock, will be one to rival all others. It is the only round-the-world race open to 40 and 50-foot yachts. These boats will be showcases of state-of-the-art design and technology skippered by those keen to embark on one of the most gruelling and competitive adventures on our planet. Based on the model of the Vendee Globe and the Around Alone (now 5 Oceans) this single and double-handed round-the-world race will be split into five legs. The Global Ocean Challenge, sponsored by the Portuguese port of Portimao, will see the fleet leave from Portimao and sail to Capetown, South Africa; Leg 2 runs to Tarangua, New Zealand; Leg 3 to Bahai, Brazil; Leg 4 to Charlestown, USA; and the final Leg 5 back to Portimao. This 32,000 mile race will take the fleet through the world’s most hostile conditions with two of the five legs in the southern ocean. The race is hoping to attract 40 entries with competitors from all over the world. Hannah’s entry into the single-handed 40-foot class, will produce huge media attention as she competes in the most competitive class alongside French Vendee Globe hero Patrice Carpentier.
